This week’s Ask the Docs answers are provided by Dr. Jaclyn Rodriguez, Sports Medicine Physician at Rothman Orthopaedics, Official Orthopedic Partner of All-Star Sports Academy! Remember, if you need quick access to a Rothman Physician, be sure to utilize their Fast Scheduler program!

Question: At what point after you get injured do you need to see a doctor vs just letting it rest? Also, is it then best to go to the specialist for the injury I have (i.e. if my foot is injured, should I look for a foot specialist) or go to the regular orthopedic first?

Answer: With any discomfort or soreness, a few days of rest would be reasonable. If your symptoms dissipate on their own, it would be okay to return to playing.  Every athlete’s “pain threshold” is different, but if symptoms limit you from doing simple activities of daily living, interfere with school, or negatively affect your performance in your sport or activity, I recommend an evaluation by a physician. In orthopedics, there are many subspecialists out there. A general orthopedist or sports medicine physician is a good starting point. If you live in an area where you have access to a larger orthopedic practice with multiple subspecialists (like Rothman Orthopaedics), you can certainly seek out a specific specialist for that body part (i.e. hand specialist for a hand or wrist injury, or foot and ankle specialist for an ankle injury).
