Question: Are there certain exercises that a baseball player (especially pitchers) should avoid when going to the gym that would increase the risk of injury?

Answer: Every athlete is different, and a training/exercise routine should be individualized for each athlete. It is important to keep in mind that proper technique, taking your time and not rushing, as well as not pushing a workout with excessive heavy weight, can help avoid injury. However, certain exercises that mimic “impingement” or excessive strain of the shoulder, elbow or lower back, should be avoided. Movements that bring the arms over the head and in a rotated position can cause impingement of the shoulder. Deadlifts with heavy weight can put extra strain on the lower back, so avoiding workouts that involve those exercises is something to keep in mind. Working with a qualified strength and conditioning coach can ensure proper technique and form for a safe and effective training program.
